The Impact of International Star Scientists on Irish Science

Applications are invited for two full-time structured PhD positions in Economics at the Whitaker

Institute, National University of Ireland, Galway. The successful candidates will be part of a project

team under the supervision of Professor John McHale on a project entitled The Impact of

International Star Scientists on Irish Science. The positions are for 4 years and due to begin in

October 2018.

PhD Description:

The team’s research focus will be the study of the recruitment of star scientists on the performance

of Irish science. Comparisons with other high-income small open economies will also be

undertaken. Among the outcomes of interest are the direct effects of the star on institutional

performance, indirect effects on the productivity of colleagues, implications for subsequent

recruitment, and impacts on collaboration patterns. The implications of the findings for the

development of Irish science research policy will be explored.

Requirements:

The candidates should be highly self-motivated with an ability to work independently and be willing

to undertake the coursework required under the structured PhD in Economics. Strong quantitative

skills and good communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential requirements.

Applicants should have a good primary degree (First or Second Class Honours) and ideally hold a

Masters in an appropriate discipline (Economics, Science Policy or related).

Funding:

The project is funded under Science Foundation Ireland’s Science Policy Research Programme.

The PhD stipend is €18,500 per annum and the funding will also cover University fees up to a

maximum of €5,250 per annum and is tenable for 4 years.
